Arno rafael minkkinen
Arno Rafael Minkkinen is an American/Finnish photographer, curator, writer and teacher. His photographic career began in 1971 while he was working in the advertising industry in New York.
For more than 40 years, Minkkinen has challenged the self-portrait as an art form and used his own naked body to approach and become one with nature. Through of this process, his images capture the beauty of being part of something greater and more lasting than people themselves are. Minkkinen’s photographs, often appearing physically impossible, are created in analogue and in camera, without manipulation.
His work, represented in collections such as The Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, Kiasma in Helsinki and The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMa), has received many prizes, including the Finnish State Art Prize for Photography in 2006. He has published six books. In addition, Minkkinen holds a professorial position at Massachusetts’s Lowell University and lectures at a host of various institutions.
