Italian Giorgia Fiorio, originally a singer, changed to pastures new and began studying photography at the International Centre of Photography. Known for taking a long time on her personal projects, the human form is central in Fiorio’s pictures. Her first major photography project dealt with New York boxers, a series that led to a ten-year photographic exploration of different male dominated societies in the western world. Amongst others, Fiorio photographed bullfighters, the French Foreign Legion, American firefighters and sailors. The project resulted in the publication of five books between 1990 and 1999.
The following decade, dedicated to the project «The Gift», examined religious and spiritual rituals, as well as the relationship between the individual and the holy, in 38 countries on five continents.
Fiorio photographs exclusively in black-and-white, and besides countless book releases, her powerful and beautiful photographs have been published in magazines like GEO, Stern and Life. She has exhibited at many international venues and won a string of prizes.
