Nordic Light International Festival of Photography is a one week international gathering that celebrates photography as an art. The festival’s philosophy is to bring photography out to the people, to define what is a good photography, but also to give the photography strength as a mean of communication. Other arts have always been a source of inspiration and knowledge for photography and in combination with world events, philosophy and cultural expressions, photography has become what it is today.

During the week of the festival the locals, international photographers, students, amateurs and pupils gather in what has become a melting point of photographic and cultural events. For those interested in photography, professional photographers are available for portfolio reviewing.

What they all have in common is the desire to explore the moment. In this act different types of photographers may increase their knowledge and understanding of photography as art. In addition cultural impulses as exhibitions, workshops, presentations, portfolio reading, breakfast cinema, Face to Face, literature and music are important cultural contributions to the photographers development.

The main goal of the Nordic Light International Festival of Photography’s is to create the most important meeting place for photography in Europe. A second aim is to contribute to a stronger engagement and higher understanding of a good photography. Nordic Light Events AS wants to be a spokesman of the photography’s purpose as a positive and creative activity. This may be avaible by continuously arranging workshops, conferences, exhibitions and seminars the whole year through.

Nordic Light International Festival of Photography and Nordic Light Events AS want to take advantage of the competence, experience and knowledge obtained during its existence to become better and better.

Nordic Light International Festival of Photography is financed by national, municipal and local subsidies as well as private investors who all want to contribute to a vital cultural life with great variety.

Kristiansund has beautiful surrounding like the Atlantic Ocean and steep mountains. Hiking, diving, fishing, road trips on The Atlantic Road are only some of the activities the region has to offer its guests. The festival has highlighted the region Møre and Romsdal and the country Norway on the international map, and thereby made Kristiansund more accessible as an exciting travel destination. This area was in 2009 voted as the most beautiful travel target on earth by National Geographic.

About Kristiansund and Nordmøre

Kristiansund is a clean, beautiful and open city surrounding a natural harbour, and Kristiansund´s population has one thing in common that is perhaps unusual - they live life to the full and enjoy every moment of positive attention. The town´s cultural life is very active, with all age groups participating, and the cultural events are many and varied.

Kristiansund was nearly wiped out in 1940; nearly 900 houses were demolished by fire after the town was bombed. The city the visitor encounters in 2005 has been built up over the past 50 years. The town lost its distinctive character, though traces of the old town can still be seen in the lower part of Innlandet. But the new town acquired a character all its own. Note particularly the gaily painted houses, see how Kirkelandet´s city centre has turned the gables of its houses to face the street or quay; this is how the old klippfish wharves were built.
